Course Description

The Veterinary Support Assistant – Level 3 Course is designed for students wanting to gain an understanding of the skills required in becoming a veterinary assistant. The course would be suitable for those with an interest in veterinary nursing or for those interested in becoming a veterinary nurse assistant.

The course aims to give an understanding of the different roles within a veterinary team and will cover the legal and ethical system in which they work. It will also give students an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of dogs and cats as well as giving a working knowledge of Health and Safety within veterinary practice. Other important topics covered are infection control and the different veterinary equipment used within a practice.

On successful completion on this course students will receive an accredited Level 3 Certificate of Achievement issued by TQUK.

Course Format & Delivery

You will receive access to the course materials through an online portal for a 12-month period. Students can use the portal for accessing their course materials, submitting assignments and to log tutor questions.

Please Note: An optional hard-copy book version of the course notes can also be purchased for £48.00.

This is handy if learners also want to work away from the computer and means they have course notes they can keep and refer back to beyond their online course license.

Delivery of the hard-copy materiuals is usually within 5 to 10 day working days.

The following Topics are covered: Roles and responsibilities of Veterinary Surgeons; Roles of the Veterinary Nurse; Roles of the Student Veterinary Nurse; Essentials of the legal system; and Individual character and conscience.
The following Topics are covered: Animal cell structure and cell function; Basic structure and function of the nervous system; The endocrine system; The digestive system; The urinary system; The respiratory system; The cardiovascular system; and The circulatory system.
The following Topics are covered: Principles of health and safety; Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) 2013; Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) 2002; Hazardous Waste Regulations, 2005; and Manual Handling Regulations, 1992.
The following Topics are covered: The role of infection in animal and human health; Principles of disease transmission in veterinary practice; How to maintain a clean clinical environment; and Main groups of disinfectants.
The following Topics are covered: Running a laboratory in a veterinary practice; Emergency procedures; General safety measures; How to collect and prepare urine, faecal and blood samples; How to carry out common laboratory tests; and Test results.
The following Topics are covered: Principles of pharmacy stock management; The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971; Principles of safe dispensing; Medication terms used in Pharmacology; Absorption rate; and Drug formulations.
Course Duration & Online Support

You can start this course at any time, and you would be registered for a one-year period. You also have access to a personal tutor who can be contacted by email. Your tutor is available to assist with any queries and to mark your assignments for the Awarding Body.

As the course is self-study, you can complete it as quickly as you like. Support extensions are available if students do not complete the course within the one-year period.

Assessment

The course is assessed by a series of written assignments, which are submitted to and marked by your course tutor. There is no external examination required.

TQUK Certification

On successful completion of this course students will receive a Veterinary Support Assistant Certificate of Achievement by Training Qualification UK (TQUK).

The completion of this course alone does not lead to an Ofqual regulated qualification but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills towards regulated qualifications in the future. The unit summary can be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this sector. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 3 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of difficulty involved in successful completion by the learner.
