The Understanding Autism - Level 2 Certificate (RQF) Course is suitable for anyone wanting to learn more about autism and the principles of supporting individuals on the autistic spectrum, and those looking to gain a qualification in autism awareness.

This course will help to develop an awareness and understanding of autism and show how to support individuals with the condition. This qualification is ideal for learners who support individuals with autism in a variety of settings, including health, social care, entertainment, leisure, nursing, education, training and the public sector.

The course starts with an introduction to the autistic spectrum and covers using person-centred approaches and supporting positive communication. Sensory processing, perception and cognition are then covered, including how autism can affect these processes. Finally the course concludes by covering supporting positive behaviour and how to support individuals with autism to live a healthy, happy and fulfilled life.

On successful completion of this course students will receive an NCFE Level 2 Certificate Qualification listed on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) with 18 credits.

The Understanding Autism - Level 2 Certificate (RQF) Course Includes the Following Units:
This unit provides learners with an introduction to autism, covering what is meant by ‘autism’, theories and diagnosis. Learners will also look at common misconceptions associated with autism and conditions that can co-occur with autism.
This unit covers using a person-centred approach to support individuals with autism, incorporating the preferences and needs of the individual. Learners will also look at legislation and guidance, and the support networks available to individuals and their families.
This unit covers the potential delays and difficulties in speech, language, and social development sometimes faced by individuals with autism. It also covers methods and strategies that could be used when communicating with an individual with autism.
In this unit learners will gain an understanding of sensory processing, perception, and cognition in individuals with autism - including looking at hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity. Learners will also consider how to the support the sensory needs of individuals with autism.
Through this unit learners will understand individuals’ behaviours in the context of autism. They’ll also look at how to support positive behaviour and help individuals to develop coping strategies.
This unit covers how to support individuals through transitions and life events, how to maintain their personal safety, and how to access services, facilities and employment opportunities. Learners will also gain an understanding of what it’s like for an individual to live with autism.
Course Format & Delivery

You will receive access to the course materials through an online portal for a 12-month period. Students can use the portal for accessing their course materials, submitting assignments and to log tutor questions. 

Please Note: An optional hard-copy version of the course notes can be purchased for an additional £48.00. This is useful for learners who also want to study away from the computer and means they have course notes they can keep and refer back to beyond their online course license.

Delivery of the hard-copy materials is usually within 5 to 10 working days by a recorded delivery service.

Prerequisites

There are no particular entry requirements for this course.

Students can enrol providing they are comfortable studying at a Level 2 standard.

Course Duration & Online Support

You can start this course at any time, and you would be registered for a one-year period. You also have access to a personal tutor who can be contacted through the online portal or by email. Your tutor is available to assist with any queries and to mark your assignments for the Awarding Organisation.

As the course is self-study, you can complete it as quickly as you like. Support extensions are available if students do not complete the course within the one-year period.

Assessment

Students will be required to complete a number of assignments. Your personal tutor will review, mark and provide you with feedback on your work. Coursework assignments can be returned by uploading to the online portal, by email or by post.

We recommend that assignments are completed and returned as word-processed documents through the online portal. Handwritten documents can be accepted but need to be clear and legible and may be subject to a longer marking time.

NCFE Level 2 Qualification

NCFEOn successful completion of this course students will receive an Understanding Autism Level 2 Certificate Qualification issued by NCFE.

This qualification has been accredited on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (Ofqual Qualification No. 601/6330/6) and has 18 Credits.

NCFE is recognised as an Awarding Organisation by the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, who are: the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Welsh Government, and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland. NCFE accreditation gives assurance that the content of a training course is of a high standard and meets the rigorous requirements of a national awarding organisation. This course provides successful students with a qualification listed on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, accredited by NCFE at level 2 and is assessed through NCC, a licensed NCFE centre. Accreditation by NCFE is a guarantee of quality. It means that this learning programme has been scrutinised and approved by an independent panel of experienced educational professionals and is quality audited biannually by NCFE.
