Course Description

The Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder - Level 3 Course is designed to give students an overview of the issues involved with alcohol use during pregnancy, and covers the related warning signs, symptoms and developmental outcomes The course has been developed in conjunction with experts - FASawareUK.

Many health care practitioners, teachers or family members of those affected have limited clinical knowledge in this relatively unpublicised syndrome. The course will therefore be beneficial to professionals and interested individuals alike and will help them to develop increased understanding of the problems and possible reactions and interventions. This course also looks at the neuropathology of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), including psychopathy and cognitive functioning and it will examine different interventions, including prevention and rehabilitation approaches.

On successful completion of this course students will receive a Level 3 Endorsed Certificate of Achievement from NCFE.

The Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder - Level 3 Course Includes the Following Units:
The following topics are covered: Definition of FASD; FASD and Abortion; What is Alcohol?; Alcohol Use; Alcohol Consumption in Pregnancy; and Measuring Alcohol Consumption.
The following topics are covered: Candace Thorp v Jim Beam; FAS from Diagnosis to Current Day; The Difficulties of Diagnosing FASD; and Diagnostic Criteria.
The following topics are covered: Screening for Alcohol Use (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (Audit) / The CAGE questionnaire / The T-ACE questionnaire); Other Factors Affecting FASD; In Utero Effects of Alcohol; and Risks During the 3 Trimesters.
The following topics are covered: Learning outcomes; Primary Disabilities; Neuropsychological Problems; Secondary Disabilities; Measuring Secondary Disabilities using VABS; and Measuring Adaptive & Maladaptive Behaviours.
The following topics are covered: Behavioural Checklists (Communication / Daily Living Skills / Socialisation / Spatial / Emotional / Motor Skills); Development of Children with FASD; FASD in Infancy; Neonatal Behavioural Assessment Scale; and FASD in Preschool.
The following topics are covered: FASD in the School Age - Child; FASD in Adolescence; FASD in Adulthood; FASD in Employment; Living Alone with FASD; and FASD - Support in the Future.
Course Format & Delivery

You will receive access to the course materials through an online portal for a 12-month period. Students can use the portal for accessing their course materials, submitting assignments and to log tutor questions. 

Please Note: An optional hard-copy version of the course notes can be purchased for an additional £48.00. This is useful for learners who also want to study away from the computer and means they have course notes they can keep and refer back to beyond their online course license.

Delivery of the hard-copy materials is usually within 5 to 10 working days by a recorded delivery service.

Prerequistes

There are no particular entry requirements for this course, so students can sign up providing they are comfortable studying at a Level 3 standard.

Course Duration & Online Support

You can start this course at any time, and you would be registered for a one-year period. You also have access to a personal tutor who can be contacted through the online portal or by email. Your tutor is available to assist with any queries and to mark your assignments for the Awarding Organisation.

As the course is self-study, you can complete it as quickly as you like. Support extensions are available if students do not complete the course within the one-year period.

Assessment

Students will be required to complete a number of assignments. Your personal tutor will review, mark and provide you with feedback on your work. Coursework assignments can be returned by uploading to the online portal, by email or by post.

We recommend that assignments are completed and returned as word-processed documents through the online portal. Handwritten documents can be accepted but need to be clear and legible and may be subject to a longer marking time.

NCFE Level 3 Certificate of Achievement

On successful completion of this course students will receive a Level 3 Certificate of Achievement issued by NCFE and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the details of all the units you have completed as part of your course).

The Certification has been accredited by NCFE as a Customised Qualification and leads to a certificate of achievement. It is not an Ofqual Regulated Qualification and the certificate is evidence of the knowledge and skills gained by completing the course.

NCFE is recognised as an Awarding Organisation by the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, who are: the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Welsh Government, and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland. This customised qualification has been developed by NCC to meet the specific needs of learners and has been accredited by NCFE demonstrating the quality and rigor. The learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 3 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of difficulty involved in successful completion by the learner.
