This distance learning course has been written for those involved in the care sector and will give an understanding of Diabetes Care in children & young people. The course aims to give students the essential knowledge needed to offer the very best professional approach to the management of diabetes.

Diabetes is a serious health condition where the amount of glucose in your blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly. This is due to the pancreas - a small organ that is situated behind the stomach, either not producing any insulin or it doesn't produce enough insulin - this all depends on the type of diabetes a person has.

The World Health Organization estimate that over 347 million people worldwide including 2.9 million people in the UK have diabetes and it is estimated that 630,000 people in the UK have the condition, but don't know it.

It is important to try and spot the symptoms of diabetes as quickly as possible, as this can help to prevent any of the more serious complications associated with the condition developing, or progressing further, and this course is ideal for those wanting a good knowledge of the condition.

On successful completion of this course students will receive a QLS Level 2 Endorsed Certificate of Achievement.

The Diabetes Care in Children & Young People - QLS Level 2 Course includes the following units:
The following topics are included: What is diabetes?; What is type 1 diabetes?; How the pancreas works; Understanding glucose; and Understanding insulin.
The following topics are included: Recognising the symptoms of type 1 diabetes; Recognising the symptoms of type 2 diabetes; Diabetes in babies; Diabetes in children; Diabetes in teenagers; Type 2 diabetes in children; Older people with type 1 diabetes; and Diabetes Insipidus (DI).
The following topics are included: Understanding medication and what is needed; and How to administer medication.
The following topics are included: Atherosclerosis; Heart disease; Strokes; Diabetic kidney disease (nephropathy); Diabetic eye problems; Diabetic retinopathy; Cataracts; Glaucoma; Diabetic neuropathy; Susceptibility to infection such as urinary tract infections (UTIs); Skin and mouth conditions; Osteoporosis; Hearing problems; Impotence and erectile problems; High cholesterol; Gastroparesis; and Ketones.
The following topics are included: Diet; Eating diabetic foods; Sweets and treats; Diets to avoid; Eating plan for a diabetic; Experimenting with alcohol; Understanding carbohydrates; Fats; Fizzy drinks and fruit juices; and The importance of water.
The following topics are included: How the service user deals with the condition; How the parents/carers deal with a diagnosis; Caring for children with diabetes; and What teachers need to know about their students.
The following topics are included: Living with the condition as they age; Problems faced in teenage years; The limitations of being a diabetic; and Questions that the sufferers ask.
The following topics are included: Having a hypoglycaemic episode; Having a hyperglycaemic episode; and Ketoacidosis.
The following topics are included: Teenage pregnancy in a diabetic; What to consider when deciding to have a baby; Contraindications of pregnancy and Gestational diabetes.
Course Format & Delivery

You will receive access to the course materials through an online portal for a 12-month period. Students can use the portal for accessing their course materials, submitting assignments and to log tutor questions. 

Please Note: An optional hard-copy version of the course notes can be purchased for an additional £48.00. This is useful for learners who also want to study away from the computer and means they have course notes they can keep and refer back to beyond their online course license.

Delivery of the hard-copy materials is usually within 5 to 10 working days by a recorded delivery service.

Prerequisites

There are no particular entry requirements for this course.

Students can enrol providing they are comfortable studying at a Level 2 standard.

Course Duration & Online Support

You can start this course at any time, and you would be registered for a one-year period. You also have access to a personal tutor who can be contacted through the online portal or by email. Your tutor is available to assist with any queries and to mark your assignments for the Awarding Organisation.

As the course is self-study, you can complete it as quickly as you like. Support extensions are available if students do not complete the course within the one-year period.

Assessment

Students will be required to complete a number of assignments. Your personal tutor will review, mark and provide you with feedback on your work. Coursework assignments can be returned by uploading to the online portal, by email or by post.

We recommend that assignments are completed and returned as word-processed documents through the online portal. Handwritten documents can be accepted but need to be clear and legible and may be subject to a longer marking time.

QLS Endorsed Certification

At the end of this course, successful learners will receive a QLS Level 2 Endorsed Certificate of Achievement from the Quality Licence Scheme and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the components the learner has completed as part of the course).

To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 2 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of demand/complexity involved in successful completion by the learner. 

The course itself has been designed by NCC to meet specific learners’ and/or employers’ requirements which cannot be satisfied through current regulated qualifications. The Quality Licence Scheme endorsement involves robust and rigorous quality audits by external auditors to ensure quality is continually met. A review of courses is carried out as part of the endorsement process.
