Course Description

The Deaf Awareness - Level 2 Course is a general introduction to deafness. Its purpose is to provide information and strategies that will enable individuals to understand a range of deaf issues and use the knowledge gained to communicate more effectively with those from the hard of hearing through to the profoundly deaf.

The course is designed for anyone in a work or social capacity who has the potential to come into contact with deaf people, for example banks and retail staff, care workers, education and training bodies, emergency services, hospital and health centre staff, housing associations, legal services, public sector workers, support organisations, theatre and cinema staff, transport bodies and breakdown services, friends, family members and partners, whilst also being a valuable first step for people planning on becoming a communication professional.

The programme will equip the reader with awareness skills that when applied will reduce the barriers arising from the communication difficulties between hearing and deaf people.

On successful completion of this course students will receive a Level 2 Endorsed Certificate of Achievement from NCFE.

The Deaf Awareness - Level 2 Course Includes the Following Units:
The following topics are included: Terminology used to describe different types and levels of deafness, Terminology that is no longer acceptable, Potential clues that may indicate a hearing loss.
The following topics are included: The difficulties for lip-readers caused by the speaker and the construction of the English language, The differentiation between words and letters that are visible and those that are not visible, The four visible letter groups and recognise words and letter that look the same, The considerations needed when selecting an appropriate room/area for a meeting with a lip-reader, The strategies to employ when speaking to a lip-reader.
The following topics are included: Sign language systems used in the education of deaf children, The distinctions between the sign language systems and British Sign Language (BSL), The grammar and syntactical differences between BSL and English, The advantages and disadvantages of English text, The strategies to employ when speaking to Deaf BSL-users.
The following topics are included: The range of assistance aids available, Assistance aids to the type of deafness, Appropriate equipment needed in a range of situations, Where to source assistance equipment from.
The following topics are included: The role of different communication professionals, Considerations needed when using a communication professional, How to find and book a communication professional.
The following topics are included: Elements that distinguish Deaf community members, Deaf culture differs from hearing culture, The role of Deaf clubs and centres, The use of capital D to represent people with Deaf culture and identity.
The following topics are included: The elements of the Equality Act and how it relates to deaf issues, The elements of the Human Rights Act that can be related to dead issues, The limitations of the legislation available.
The following topics are included: The main organisations concerned with deafness, The role of national and local organisations, The advantages and disadvantages in the role of national and local organisations.
Course Format & Delivery

You will receive access to the course materials through an online portal for a 12-month period. Students can use the portal for accessing their course materials, submitting assignments and to log tutor questions. 

Please Note: An optional hard-copy version of the course notes can be purchased for an additional £48.00. This is useful for learners who also want to study away from the computer and means they have course notes they can keep and refer back to beyond their online course license.

Delivery of the hard-copy materials is usually within 5 to 10 working days by a recorded delivery service.

Prerequisites

There are no particular entry requirements for this course.

Students can enrol providing they are comfortable studying at a Level 2 standard.

Course Duration & Online Support

You can start this course at any time, and you would be registered for a one-year period. You also have access to a personal tutor who can be contacted through the online portal or by email. Your tutor is available to assist with any queries and to mark your assignments for the Awarding Organisation.

As the course is self-study, you can complete it as quickly as you like. Support extensions are available if students do not complete the course within the one-year period.

Assessment

Students will be required to complete a number of assignments. Your personal tutor will review, mark and provide you with feedback on your work. Coursework assignments can be returned by uploading to the online portal, by email or by post.

We recommend that assignments are completed and returned as word-processed documents through the online portal. Handwritten documents can be accepted but need to be clear and legible and may be subject to a longer marking time.

NCFE Level 2 Certificate of Achievement

On successful completion of this course students will receive a Level 2 Certificate of Achievement issued by NCFE and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the details of all the units you have completed as part of your course).

The Certification has been accredited by NCFE as a Customised Qualification and leads to a certificate of achievement. It is not an Ofqual Regulated Qualification and the certificate is evidence of the knowledge and skills gained by completing the course.

NCFE is recognised as an Awarding Organisation by the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, who are: the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Welsh Government, and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland. This customised qualification has been developed by NCC to meet the specific needs of learners and has been accredited by NCFE demonstrating the quality and rigor. The learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 2 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of difficulty involved in successful completion by the learner.
